Miao medicine, a unique branch of traditional Chinese medicine, plays a vital role in certain remote areas with its holistic view of life and natural therapies. In China, the uneven distribution of healthcare resources often leaves modern medical services out of reach for certain populations. Miao doctors, with their herbal remedies, acupuncture, and personalized treatments, have become an indispensable part of healthcare in these marginalized regions, offering not only physical healing but also spiritual support deeply rooted in local culture.

Since 2022, I have been focusing on Miao doctors from my hometown in the Qiandongnan region of Guizhou, exploring not only the survival of Miao medicine but also broader social and cultural issues. In contemporary society, the standardization of technology and systems often neglects the specific needs of individuals and communities. In contrast, Miao medicine’s emphasis on holistic care, its reliance on natural resources, and its integration within community relationships offer an alternative perspective. This approach is not merely a solution, but a value system that highlights the harmony between humans and nature while acknowledging the complexity and interconnectedness of life.

The existence of Miao medicine serves as a reminder that healing is not merely a technical process but one that requires attention to cultural, ecological, and emotional dimensions. It invites us to reconsider how deep and tangible connections can be forged in life and how we can restore a deeper balance and resonance between people and nature.
